How long does a DNS change take?

DNS propagation, TTL and clearing the cache.

DNS ~1 min read Updated: 30.09.2026

DNS changes don’t reach DNS servers worldwide instantly — each server keeps the old data for the TTL period. This is called DNS propagation.

  • DNS record changes: usually from a few minutes to 1–2 hours.
  • Nameserver changes: usually 1–4 hours, up to 24–48 hours at most.

To speed up propagation

  1. Clear your browser cache or open the site in a private (incognito) window.
  2. Clear the DNS cache on your computer: ipconfig /flushdns on Windows, sudo dscacheutil -flushcache on macOS.
  3. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and check over mobile data.
You can check the result from different countries on sites like dnschecker.org.
